Drywall - Part 1

The drywallers have been here for over two weeks and have really transformed the house.  The now white interior reflects the sunlight, making it much brighter than a few weeks back.  It really is an art form to apply the 'mud' (drywall compound) so smoothly that the seams disappear.  The two brothers drywalling the house have been doing it for thirty years and it shows.

Drywall being loaded into the house.  The sheets fit in the side window one by one with an inch to spare.

Sheets of drywall stacks in each room, ready to be screwed to the studs.

Cedar Roof

Last week, the cedar roof was complete and it looks great.  We had a few hiccups along the way but we now have the four skylights and the ridge vent installed along with some good looking shingles.  They will fade to their permanent grey colour within about one year.

Bundles of shingles arrive.

Detail of layers of tar paper that are placed between each layer of cedar.

Roof vents intalled (were later removed and replaced with a RIDGE vent, which is more inconspicuous).

Detail on cottage dormer.

Roof complete!

Insulation - Sprayed & Blown

A very busy week here on the farm.  While the septic system was being installed, the insulation was also going in.  We went with a 'hybrid' system of both spray and blown in insulation.  We put sprayed insulation in areas that are difficult to vapor barrier like eaves.  In the rest of the straightforward areas, we used blown in fiberglass insulation.
